Cherokee to Lake Allatoona

Pretty impressive drive for a flatlander Florida native!

On the way to the rally in Cherokee, I didn’t take any photos.  Mainly because it was my first experience with twisty, winding, steep, two lane roads bordered on one side by mountains and on the other side by white water churning just feet from my window.   I was a nervous wreck!

However, since I knew what to expect, the drive back was simply awesome.  Unfortunately, the white water was on Ron’s side and I didn’t get any good photos through the windshield.  But the mountain scenery was glorious!

We are at Lake Allatoona again this evening.  It is so beautiful and so peaceful.  We’ll be here for 7 nights, then head back home until we leave for Florida in November.  I’ll post pictures of the campground tomorrow.

And, as promised, I’m posting a photo of Scott and Allison and family with their new Parkliner.  It is so much fun to see a young family with a new camper and think of all the camping experiences and memory-making adventures that lie ahead for them.

I hope we see them at other rallies.  It was so nice to see little ones being exposed to camping and hopefully a lifetime of enjoying the outdoors.

Petersburg Corps of Engineers Campground

Petersburg COE campsite on a gray day

Even though it’s a chilly, gray day, it’s beautiful here at Petersburg COE campground.  The warm weather that was predicted to arrive here Sunday has moved back two days.  It’s supposed to arrive Tuesday now.

A foggy and drizzly drive

The day started out foggy and drizzly and stayed that way all day.  It made the 3-1/2 hour drive seem a lot longer than it actually was.

It felt so good to get set up and establish our little home-for-a-week.  We took a short walk to get a quick overview of the scenery, then Ron took off to buy a couple of grocery items that he had forgotten.

I snugged in my bed, propped up on pillows, enjoying the scenery outside the windows, and surfed my favorite discussion boards.

The Paige Bridges print that Gail gave me is now hanging in the Casita!

Tomorrow will probably be a very laid back day, too, due to so-so weather.  But when the sun comes out, we’ll start exploring in earnest!

Indian Springs State Park, GA

Our little Aliner is parked at Indian Springs State Park in Middle Georgia tonight.  It’s a gorgeous place.  There are very few campers here, so it is peaceful and very private.

Turning off I-75 onto Highway 42 felt like entering another world.   It’s a curving, two lane, very rural road still sporting autumn colored scenery, with several cattle operations along the way.

We built a camp fire, and Ron grilled burgers.  As we were sitting around the fire after dark, Ron remarked, “This is real camping!”  It couldn’t have been a more relaxed and satisfying camping experience.

There is so much here to explore, but unfortunately we don’t have time to check out the Creek Indian museum, the springs, or any of the other beautiful sights.  We definitely plan on coming back when we can spend more time.

We did discover that this is the oldest state park in the country.  Amazing that it is still so unspoiled.

Oh… I did want to mention the camp host.  He is probably the friendliest and most helpful camp host I’ve ever run into.  His name is Dick.  I’m curious to find out if he is here year round or not.  He seemed genuinely disappointed to hear that we were only staying one night.

At Mom’s Place

The Aliner at Mom's place

We are camped at Mom’s place now.  It’s pretty quiet here.

As usual at Mom’s, there are just scenery photos because Mom doesn’t like to have her picture taken.  Maybe I can get one of her dressed for church in the morning… although she always looks like she stepped out of a bandbox. (Wow, that phrase sure dates me!)  🙂

Regular followers of this blog have seen photos of Mom’s property before, so I’ll just post a few without comment.

Last Day at FDR State Park

This is my favorite photo of our Aliner here at FDR State Park

The campground emptied out this morning.  Now our little Aliner is among the small handful of campers left.

It is absolutely glorious here.  Quiet and serene, and achingly beautiful.

Ron and I went on a two hour walk around the campground and cabin areas this afternoon to check out the scenery.  I’ll let the photos and captions tell the story.

Love these hills!

A little scary trying to back the trailer in with deep ditches on each side of the road.

On the bottom is stonework done by the CCC in the 30's. On top of the original stonework are rocks enclosed in anchor chain fencing. I found it a very telling commentary on the difference in craftsmanship.

Rental cabins

This was my favorite cabin. It's a lot smaller than most, and I found its appearance charming.

I remembered seeing steps from the cabin area to the camping area, but couldn't remember where they were. So after we gingerly descended this hill, leaning on our hiking poles for support, I looked up and there were the steps we had missed!

I'm including this photo just because I thought the tree roots undercut by the stream were cool.
