Tatting Christmas Cards

A tatted Christmas card

I’ve been working on various tatted motifs and trim that would look Christmassy done in red, green and white.

This evening I went to Hobby Lobby looking for shiny little sequins, bells, beads and ribbons to make the cards look more festive.  But when I got home and started arranging the motifs and edging on cards, I realized that, at least to my eyes, the plain tatting is more beautiful.  Adding shiny things to it seems to detract from rather than enhance it.

Pictured is one motif and edging that I especially like.  I’ve done others that I’m not as pleased with.  So I will probably do more of this design, then do some Christmas tree patterns.

It was 100 degrees again today.  Summer isn’t giving up easily.  Making Christmas cards in an air conditioned house helps put me in a delicious crisp weather frame of mind!  🙂

New Tatting Pattern Books

Awesome tatting pattern books!

These two AWESOME tatting pattern books arrived today.

I wasn’t too impressed with the cover of Mary Konior’s book, but when I opened it up, I couldn’t believe what a treasure it turned out to be.  The patterns are elegant, and as modern as tomorrow.

Tatting Artistry in Thread by Helma Siepmann has stunning flowers, blossoms, leaves, deciduous trees, evergreen trees….  the photos are gorgeous.  I have been dreaming of all the beautiful things I can create with them!

So they will definitely go with me on the trip to Florida.

My tatting is improving

Second try at this bookmark pattern

This is my second try working this pattern. It's a big improvement over the first.

Haven’t heard from the RV shop yet.  I hope they get the camper done soon.  I left some of my jeans packed in it and I need them!

In the meantime, I’ve been tatting, and my work is getting better.  I do tat too tightly, but will continue to work on that.

Here’s my latest… and I am so proud of it!  Again, it’s one of Jon’s beautiful free patterns.

I decided to use my first flawed version as a motif on a little girl’s tote bag.  It looks great as a motif, and the mistakes aren’t so glaring when used this way.

Little Girl’s Purse

I finally finished the little purse tonight.

I had a hard time finding appropriate beginner edging patterns.  Finally I found a pattern on one of the needle tatting forums.  Then I saw this really cool picture on Flickr of bunny ears edging.  So I managed to adapt it to work on my project.

I looked and looked for a cat pattern for the back pocket that would work up small enough on beginner size 10 thread and size 5 (* see note at end) needles, but couldn’t find one I liked.  So I made one up that looks a lot like the cats I used to draw in first grade.

Hopefully the recipient won’t be too critical.

I did sew everything down very firmly so whoever gets it will have to work hard at tearing the flowers off!

That’s it for the crafts for a few days.  I need a break!

Will start repairing the weather stripping on the Aliner next week.  Some of it has come loose.

*Edited to add:  I thought I was using size 5 needles.  I was actually using size 3 which is for light sports yarn.  No wonder the stitches were so loose!

Needlework & Shorter Days

Although our days are still in the 90’s and high 80’s, the nights are getting cooler, and the days are noticeably shorter.

So I am working on learning tatting in the evenings.   I am getting the hang of it, but have a lot to learn about tensioning my stitches.  It is fun to play with — to see these amazing patterns that are made of nothing but half hitch knots develop!

I bought some tiny little girls purses and tote bags for adults to decorate with tatting for Christmas gifts.  It sure is a lot more fun to make gifts than to go out and try to find something appropriate to buy.  I do hope that the recipients will like them.

I am also working on an afghan for myself to match one that I made for Ron last year.  They are twin-bed sized.  And they are great in the Aliner for putting over a blanket when we camp in cold weather.  So when I get this finished, our little camper beds will match again!
