Suwannee & an Extinct Town Named Columbus

We are really enjoying our stay here.  There is so much to see, and the walking is doing me a world of good.

Gail and Mike moved to a hotel when she was so sick.  She is bouncing back, and is already missing camping here in the van.  That’s hardcore!  😀

They close on the house Thursday, and we’ll head to another campground until the 24th to give them time to settle in and for Gail to recuperate.  Then we’ll driveway camp at their place for a few days before heading somewhere else after the 1st of the year.

I'm not sure what this is. It looks like tracks from a very narrow gauge railroad with train wheels on it.

I bought some miniature Christmas decorations for the Casita today.  Will plan to put them up tomorrow after we visit with Mom.

Oh, I got reported for being a bad dog mom today.  We had gone out for a late lunch, shopping, then stopping in to see Gail and Mike.  We got back right after sunset around 5:30 or 6:00.  The new neighbor next door told me that Sunny was clawing at the door and making distressed sounds, so he reported us.

I know that as Sunny’s health declines, he sometimes has panic attacks.  I thought he would be okay inside the trailer with Sheba for company.  Apparently no more, though. So I will have to take him everywhere with us from now on.

He is not using the puppy pads that I place strategically on the floor.  So I think I am going to have to set the alarm to get up in the middle of the night and take him outside for a walk around the campsite so he doesn’t wet on the floor.

The town of Columbus had around 500 residents. Their old cemetery had 4 separate enclosed areas.

I have thought about when it might be time to have the vet put him to sleep.  But he still loves his walks, loves being around us, and loves eating, so he still is enjoying his little doggie life.  So it’s not nearly time yet.

BTW, no one stopped by to check on the dogs, so I imagine the Ranger saw our truck parked out front and no dog noise coming from the trailer, so he probably just drove on.  I’m guessing that’s what happened anyway.

This person must have been much loved and must have loved the beach. The grave has its own enclosure, and it is lined with conch shells.

These two graves were the only ones that weren't in a fenced in enclosure.

We use belly bands on our incontinent male dog. They fit right around his belly and you put a poise pad inside. Then if he wets it goes in the pass and not on your camper

    • Barbara, do they sell those at pet stores or do you order them online? That sounds like exactly what we need.

Either. W got ours online, they are neoprene and wash and dry beautifully. They have saved our home.

You are more than welcome. I have been following you for quite awhile and writing all the places I want to go from your photos. You have sweet pups, good luck with the belly bands. Just use people pads as the pet ones are very expensive

  3. Poor guy. but couldn’t your neighbors wait until you came back to tell you before they ran off and reported you. goodness sake.
Those old cemeteries sure tell some sad stories but are so interesting. Maybe the walled off ones were families. Interesting history

    • Jo, I was irritated at him for interfering, but if something had been an emergency, I would have wanted someone to help the dogs.

I imagine that they were family plots, but since the names didn’t match, I wasn’t sure.

  4. Looks like a fascinating spot to camp. Feel sorry for poor Gail, having to move while trying to recuperate from an illness. Moving is bad enough, even when you feel great!

Merry Christmas, Sharon. Hope the New Year brings lots of new adventures your way.

    • Yes, Gail has had her hands full. Fortunately they are drastically down sizing. She bought a small (but very attractive) retirement home and they have deliberately downsized their “stuff.” Also they are not going to move all their belongings until the contractor is through moving a wall to make a large living area instead of two small rooms. So they will be camping in their own home for a while. She is also going to have them build a carport and a back porch.

I doubt all this stress is healthy, but once it is done, all she will have to worry about is making it prettier and where she will take off camping next.

A very, very Merry Christmas to you, too, Judy. And I so look forward to seeing where you will go and what you will do in the coming year. Take care of yourself, hubby and Jezzie. 🙂

  7. Just returned from Kansas City and trying to catch up on my Blogging Family…Sorry to hear about “Sunny”…..they are “Family”. The campground is one of those I stayed at with the GBoys…The problem we had is it rained for 3 days straight…didn’t get to see the stuff you are seeing….as you said the sites are very small/tight…but it sure is a serene setting…take care and Enjoy!! 8. Hope the closing goes well today (Thursday!) and Gail continues to recover. Love your family’s “can-do” attitude…(and yours.)
Happy to hear the exercise is making you stronger. We believe in it and regret we are doing less as we age.
Excited that this winter get away is working so well for you and your family!
