It’s planting time!

I haven’t had a garden the past couple of years, and this year the urge is irresistible. I’m starting with a micro garden in Earth Boxes. Later I’ll get the raised beds cleaned up, reinstall the irrigation system, and plant them, too.
I also got pink caladiums and pink and white oriental lilies planted in a 3′ x 3′ planter. Almost everything I plant has to be in raised beds as our ground is solid clay and white quartz rocks.
The trip to Coleman Lake tamed the cabin fever monster, so now we are back to our original travel plan for this year. Camp within an hour of home for a week once a month and get all of our bills except the mortgage paid off in October!

We are planning to meet up with friend Peggy for 3 days in late April at a state park in NE Georgia.
I’m planning to get the Casita washed and shined next week as Peggy has never seen it. 🙂
I have lots more planting to do. The seeds I started a few weeks ago should be ready to go into the ground next week.
This is the most heady, glorious season of the year!

I planted pink and purple impatiens around the hosta pot.
This poor hosta has been in the same big pot for several years, and faithfully comes back each spring. Maybe this fall I’ll remember to divide it. 🙂

Yes, Sheba’s coat is really shiny now. Our favorite neighbor came by to play with her today and she was in doggie heaven because the neighbor chases and plays hide and seek with her. 🙂

/ April 12, 2014Bonnie, I started doing that because when we cover the beds with hay, the ground is just teeming with earthworms in the spring. It also helps keep the weeds down. We’ll rake it off and throw it in the compost pile, but some will have deteriorated and enriched the soil.

You can get close to the same feeling on the road by hitting the farmers’ markets! 🙂

/ April 12, 2014I hope summer takes its sweet time getting here. Spring and fall are my favorite times of the year. I endure summer and winter.
Today, I think it got up to 80. But there was a nice breeze and it didn’t feel uncomfortable to me. The ten-day forecast shows a lot of days in the 70’s so I want to enjoy them to the fullest!
Raised beds are wonderful anywhere you have difficult ground. They do tend to dry out faster, though.

I have flowers on my porch and I am so tempted to put something in pot that I have in the back yard but It’s hard to keep them alive with the heat and I feel awful using so much water since we haven’t had any rain. Winter monsoons never happened and the summer one didn’t do much. But I will come by here and enjoy yours.

/ April 15, 2014Judy, Earth Box is a brand name for large, self-watering containers. Mine are two of the older styles that I’ve had for 15 years. They are great for growing any vegetable that can grow in pots. Also for herbs. That’s how I keep my mint from taking over the garden.
The first year I had them, I used their method, but after that, just put good potting soil, compost and organic fertilizer in them. I don’t know what their new products are like, but their old ones sure are great. http://earthbox.com/
