At least someone is enjoying the weather today, so I thought I’d document it for posterity!
I had the oral surgery yesterday. It was pretty extensive and includes an incision almost to the center of the roof of my mouth. But amazingly, I am doing GREAT today. The doctor did not prescribe antibiotics. Really weird for such intensive surgery. All he said was do salt water rinses. Fortunately, he did prescribe pain pills, but he wasn’t too happy about doing that.
I think it’s great that doctors are trying to cut down on overuse of antibiotics, but I don’t think senior citizen are an appropriate age group to experiment on. It might be better to start on 20 somethings with fantastic immune systems. I’m keeping a close eye on it and at the first hint of infection, I’ll go go my regular doctor who will provide standard treatment.
And if I ever need an oral surgeon again, I’ll find another one!
I’m still eating pureed foods, but I thought I’d share the skillet quiche I concocted the day before the surgery. At least, that’s what I named it since I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate. 🙂
It evolved when I realized I had two yellow crookneck squash that were going to have to be thrown out if I didn’t use them that day. So I trimmed them and decided to shred them… maybe make low carb hash browns out of them. But after I got them grated, I noticed I had a little piece of cabbage that needed to be used up, so I shredded a little of it.
I put 1-1/2 T butter in a skillet, added the squash and cabbage, then seasoned the squash with celery seed, salt, pepper, minced garlic flakes, and a few red pepper flakes. Next I cut up some green onions and sprinkled them over the squash. I had two cherry tomatoes left in the refrigerator, so I sliced those and added them. I cooked them slowly until they were soft on the bottom, then turned the veggies over with a spatula.
Next I topped everything with the rest of the leftover country ham and bacon that I had, and cooked until all the veggies no longer tasted raw. Then I poured 5 beaten eggs over the mixture and cooked until the eggs began to set. Finally I covered the eggs with shredded cheddar and pepper jack cheese and cooked until the cheese started melting. Then I turned off the heat and put the lid on the pot so the eggs would finish cooking and the cheese would finish melting.
If you let this concoction set for about 10 minutes, you can cut it in quarters or sixths and serve it like a quiche. Kinda. 🙂
I thought it turned out okay. Ron really liked it. But the best part is that it helped me get rid of a bunch of leftovers without them looking or tasting like leftovers!

/ January 28, 2014I made some nice hot chicken curry tonight out of leftover chicken and leftover broth. Couldn’t handle pureed stuff anymore. Had to make it runny so I could eat it, but it is so much fun playing with leftovers!

/ January 28, 2014I bet it would have been good with goat cheese, OG! Glad you liked it!
If you make the “quiche” feel free to spice it up if you like spicy foods, or to use other vegetables, because it’s a little bland.
Yes, I heard the Panhandle was really getting it! I bet that breaks some records. YOU stay warm and stay safe on the roads if you must get out in it.
67…. if I could, I’d be heading south for those temperatures Saturday! 🙂

/ January 28, 2014I think Sheba was born to be a herder up in Montana! She missed her calling! I can just picture the little Shih Tzus trying to make their way around in it!
I love to see snow come down, I love to see it cover the ground and make everything beautiful… but I want to see it all gone the next day, too.
Spring can’t come soon enough for me! If we see 5 or 6 days in the mid 60’s in February, we are out of here! I have a terrible case of cabin fever!

/ January 28, 2014A glass of brandy sounds like really good medicine tonight! 🙂
Earlier I was afraid we might lose power, so I did all the preps like filling the bathrub, making sure the laundry was caught up, etc. But it looks pretty calm here, so I think we are going to be fine.

/ January 28, 2014A couple of comments….
1. There’s something wrong about seeing photos of a Georgia dog like Sheba up to her butt in snow. It’s jest NOT right.
2. Have to disagree with you a bit about the painkiller thing. My belief is that Seniors are probably Less likely to need/want painkillers than 20-somethings are. I had a lifetime of oral surgery last year, and was sent home each time with an envelope of pills. Personally, I don’t like taking them, so I didn’t. Never was I really tempted to take them. Instead of finding a new oral surgeon, just ask for painkillers. I’m sure they will be readily dispensed. He/she could probably tell that you were a camping/Peace Corps type of person, and wouldn’t need help. A 20-something would. 😉

/ January 28, 2014You are right about the Georgia dog up to her butt in snow being just plain wrong. But she loves it!
You know, Judy, I do have a very high tolerance for pain and handle it so much better than a lot of people. In fact, a lot of times when I am really sick, I don’t even recognize it at first. I just feel tired and irritable. So when I get to the point I recognize that I am sick, I am good and sick!
He did prescribe pain pills for me, but I could tell he would rather not have. But I’ve only taken 3 and doubt I will take any more. I hate feeling drugged!

/ January 28, 2014Anne, I was truly surprised about the salt water washes. I thought I was getting the short shift from the surgeon at first. I’m really happy he tried the natural way now. I’m so relieved not to be pumping more antibiotics into my system and worrying about all the good bugs they will kill and fungi that might develop!
I just was expecting antibiotics, so it threw me a curve!

/ January 28, 2014Great to read you’re doing so well after your surgery. Some doctors are beginning to shy away from prescribing pain medication due the prescription drug abuse problems that seem to be everywhere. Weird that he wouldn’t give you one for antibiotics, though. Tried to get a picture of Sally in the snow today. She wasn’t in one place, long enough. She’d run out and back to the door, full speed. Definitely not a snow dog. Going to try your recipe, sounds great.

If you try the recipe, add some stuff to spice it up. Maybe pepperoni? Hot sausage? It’s good, but it is bland. 🙂
