/ October 21, 2013Hey lady!! Hope this finds you feeling better! I have a question that CozyBegone said you might have some insight into. We have two Shih Tzus that are our “babies.” They travel with us and at home they sleep with us. We have made our LD into the twin bed configuration and was just interested in knowing how things go in a Casita with two small doggies? One of our Shih Tzus is elderly and the other is much younger but has had back troubles. Do you think the outdoor pen is a good choice for when we are outside and perhaps doggie beds on the floor at night? Did your doggies adjust easily? Any thoughts or suggestions to make things go smoothly would be appreciated.

/ October 21, 2013Gerri, my Maltese is old, has arthritis and cataracts. He sleeps on the bed with me and gets bad separation anxiety when he is away from me. He has never done well caged. He gets panicky when I leave him in a pen. On the other hand, he is happy sunup to sundown being leashed to our Casita’s door steps. Essentially, if I am in eyesight, he is content.
Sheba is a lot bigger and a lot more active. It took a while for her to adapt to being penned up, but she gets bored and does best with penning her until she gets tired of that, then leashing her in another part of the camp site for a while. The combination, combined with walks, works to keep her from being miserably bored.
For your little dogs, if they don’t mind being penned, the pen gives them an added layer of safety from other animals who might bother them. Sometimes you will run into large dogs whose owners let them run free in campgrounds and that can be very scary for small dogs. It terrifies Sunny. He feels very threatened.
If they are not used to being occasionally caged, there might be a bit of adjustment. I found that getting inside the pen with them now and then helped. That way it was just another “room,” not a place of exile and punishment. Also, I set it up close enough to where I am sitting that they don’t feel banished. You can hook the pen with bungees to the trailer bumper, holes in the tire cover, the hitch, picnic table, trees, fallen logs, or whatever when the ground is too hard to stake.
We travel in our Casita with an Aussie and a Maltese, which can be difficult. Two Shih Tsus ought to work out fine!
